Voice Activities

In this activity we will be practicing to get more voice into our writing! Begin by passing out all of the supplies needed to make your hand paper bag moose puppet and set the supplies in front of the students and instruct them to NOT touch anything yet! Click on the picture for a direct link of supplies and instruction on how to make yours!
Once you've built up a little suspense for the young ones, begin the step by step process to construct you moose. After everyone has created their puppet have them write about what just happened. Give them 1-2 minutes to write and then pick 1-2 students to share their writing.
"The teacher set out art supplies and we made a puppet."
Sounds pretty boring, eh?

Explain to the students that their writing doesn't have any voice. It doesn't have any thought or feeling, it's just recalling a fact or action.
Instruct your students to write again about what just happened but this time have them tell how they felt while it was happening.
What was going through their heads when you got out the supplies? (You should also be writing with the students and sharing your examples as well.)
"The teacher set out art supplies and told us not to touch anything yet. That was a challenge for me, I like to touch everything! Then we were allowed to make a cute, little moose puppet. I like making mine talk with a deep, low sound when he talks."
This time the writing should have humor, description, feeling, and VOICE.

Practice and Application
To practice what the students have just learned about adding voice to their writing have them write a story. Incorporate voice into a story about their moose.
