Writing Trait Activities Rationale
The following activities within the Writing Traits Activities (Ideas for Writing, Organization, and Voice) are created based on originality and creativeness that will foster a deep connection with the book. I have designed the activities to get students to practice higher-level thinking through different writing genres. Each activity effectively addresses one of the top three levels of Bloom's Taxonomy and relates to the Common Core Standards. A rationale for each activity is below.
Ideas for Writing
The activities encourage students to compare (analysis) their writing to the book that they have read and construct (applying) a paper moose out of adjectives they have come up to describe a moose. The activities relate to:
Organization This activity introduces the overall structure of a story while creating a fun manipulative for students to keep. Students break down the events in a story and categorize (creating) events from beginning, middle, to last using "first", "then", and "last" terminology. Students re-read what they have constructed aloud and decide if it is in the correct order or not. This is also great practice for younger students to have a chance to read their own writing and collaborate with their peers. The activities relate to:
Voice This activity is to introduce students into taking their writing to the next level. Through this writing prompt students build suspense over a simple art project of a paper moose puppet, explain (creating) what is going on with the art supplies through descriptive writing (evaluating), and then build upon their writing. Their first sentence is generic and simple and as they discuss how to strengthen the writing through adding voice and descriptions the writing comes alive! Students can also use the art project of a moose puppet to act out the voice they've created in their writing. A reader's theater is a great way for students to perform their writing whether it is just by themselves or with a group of collaborating peers. This activity relates to:
